Putting DNA to Work
The Gene Scene

Overview of Activity
Students are introduced to the concept of genetics through a series of interactive activities and games. They learn basic definitions and explore various applications through which the study of DNA affects daily lives.

Description
We suggest that other parts of this web site be used as pre-visit activities to prepare students for their visit to the museum. These activities are described at The Gene Scene Pre-Visit Activities page.

The following is a list of the sections of The Gene Scene with a brief description of each part.

A Nature and Nurture Walk in Mendel Park - Students learn the difference between nature and nurture by playing an interactive game.

The Science Scoop - Students read a series of interviews to learn about the genome, the purpose of the Human Genome Project, and some of the possible implications it will have on their future.

Adventures of George Amato, "DNA Detective" - Students are introduced to a scientist who uses DNA sequencing to protect endangered animal species.

Around the World with DNA - Students meet a variety of scientist who use DNA to better help and protect animal species around the world.

The Quest for the Perfect Tomato - Shows the students how both selective breeding and genetic modification can produce better sources of food.

This activity is produced by the American Museum of Natural History.
