Learning at the Marian Koshland Science Museum

Classroom Resources

The museum has identified unique, inquiry-based activities related to its Global Warming and Infectious Disease exhibits that are designed for middle and high-school students and adhere to the National Academies’ National Science Education Standards. These activities can be used in the classroom to help introduce students to basic global warming and infectious disease concepts and vocabulary and then to reinforce and enhance the ideas and concepts found in the museum exhibits.

The activites can be found at the Global Warming Activities and Infectious Disease Activities links. Search Activities provides an opportunity to search all the teaching activities by keyword and level of difficulty.

Virtual Field Trip

While a field trip visit to the Koshland Science Museum is an ideal way to learn about global warming and infectious disease, students can use the same interactive resources found in the museum by participating in a on-line Virtual Field trip. Using the same materials developed for the museum field trip program, students can explore web versions of the Infectious Disease: Evolving Challenges to Human Health, Global Warming Facts & Our Future and Putting DNA to Work exhibits without having to leave the classroom.

Museum Field Trip Visits

The Koshland Science Museum offers structured field trips for middle school, high school and undergraduate classes (free to student groups from the Washington, DC area). Classes choose to focus on either global warming or infectious disease, then divide into teams to explore the museum’s exhibits. Afterward, students participate in a peer-teaching exercise that culminates in a whole class discussion focused on a specific question.
Field Trip Overview provides a brief description of a field trip visit and procedures for reserving a time slot. Use the field trip reservation form to reserve your time slot.
Field Trip Guides contain in-depth materials to help teachers prepare for their museum visit, including the worksheets that students will complete during the field trip.

Free Bus Policy

Field trip visits to the Koshland Science Museum scheduled during the 2007–2008 academic school year are eligible for free bus transportation to and from the museum. Free bus transportation is assigned on a first come, first serve basis and is available in limited numbers, so reserve your field trip early using the on-line reservation form. Some restrictions apply. For details, please see the Free Bus Transportation Policy.

Science, Social Studies, Art, Engineering, and More!
